Apex Helicopters FAQ

How do I get started?
Contact us! We will discuss the training process and thecosts involved in more detail. We encourage anyone interested to stop by our location to take a tour and get further information. We also offer discovery flights to those who are interested.

How much will this cost?
The cost of the program will vary from person to person. If you look at our training pages, you can see the basic hour minimums for each rating. Our basic rate for the R22 is $250.00/hour for dual instruction.

Do I have to know how to fly airplanes first?
No! You don't need to have any flight experience at all. We will teach you everything you will need to know to obtain your license.

Are there any other prerequisites?
You will need to be at least 17 years old for a private rating and 18 years old for a commercial. Also, you will need to get an FAA medical (you can find a list of examiners here). We suggest getting your 2nd class medical before starting training program.

How long does it take to get your license?
The amount of time it takes to get your private license depends on the individual. If you can devote yourself to the training full time, it is possible to finish in one month. If you are only able to fly on weekends, it will obviously take you longer. Apex has no contracts, so you are free to set your own schedule.

Are there other costs?
There are some other costs; you will need to purchase some textbooks and supplies such as a headset. You will also have to pay for your check rides and written exams.

How do I pay for this training?
We accept Visa, Master Card, Discover, American Express, cash and checks. Financing can also be obtained through the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association at AOPA.org and Pilot Finance, Inc. at pilotfinance.com.

Why Robinson Helicopters?
The R22 and R44 have proven to be the most reliable and best priced training aircraft in the world. We use Robinson's because of their track record. Since most schools use this aircraft, it gives our CFI graduates the best chance of finding work as an instructor when they are done with training.

What are the requirements to become a student at Apex?
If you are a US Citizen, the only thing you need to bring is a valid US Passport or original birth certificate. You must weigh less than 240lbs in order to train with us in the R22.

Due to Homeland Security Requirements, if you are not a US Citizen, you must pass a background check before flight training can begin. This takes about a week to complete, and if you need one, give us a call and we'll walk you through the details. You'll also have to pay the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) a $130 fee to process your background check. That fee goes directly to them.

If you are here on a Visa, it must allow you to go to school. A tourist or visitor visa is not sufficient to allow you to attend flight school. A work visa (such as a L-1 visa) usually allows you to train. Contact us for details on this.
